Bare feet is a rare feat!

After you shoot for a while you notice that a lot of the content you produce is based on an intersection between your own interests and those of the people viewing your work. I'd be a fool to claim otherwise since I got into the business because I wasn't seeing material that lined up with my personal likes. I put together a list of what I liked. I put together a list of what I felt was not being done to my tastes. Those two lists coalesced to help form the mission statement that has been my work for so long.

Something that has always been missing from that list is bare feet. It's not that I don't like bare feet or that I think high heels are so incredible they must always be worn. I shoot more around the moments right after everything goes to hell in a hand-basket for the heroine and those moments usually involve someone fully dressed. Even more I find high heels make someone more helpless. If you cross a girl's ankles barefoot she'll still hop around. The same treatment with high heels on makes for someone who's not hopping around and makes for a lot of wriggling on the floor.

Tastes evolve though and so does the work. Over the years I've started to find that shoes coming off implies drama and tension to me. It implies struggle, change and evolution of the scenario. It implies time passing and therefor adds length to the story. Feet are also expressive where shoes are more static. Don't get me wrong, I'm not moving away from a lot of high heels. I'm just saying that some clips benefit greatly from bare feet. The image above speaks to my point. The clip started with Kerri Taylor in high heels. She was sitting and standing and unable to do much until she got down on the floor. As she struggled her heels fell off and that's when things seemed the most fervent. Her position on the floor allowed for more control and more struggle. The loss of her shoes gave her an edge in her attempts to get free, but the ropes held fast and seemed even tighter at that point.

JJ Tied the Right Way

Every so often I run across a word that I just don't like. It isn't a matter of it being critique, misinformed or just plain wrong. It's more a matter of it being pretentious, no a pretentiousness that hasn't been earned. In this case the word was "trite."

The context of its use kept coming up in a number of posts I'd been seeing from photographers saying they found bondage photography trite. I'll be the first to admit that it can be just that, but I really do not agree with labels against entire genres. Three times I saw this word used by three different people. One had a decent portfolio while the others displayed work obviously derivative of other photographers. Odd that they would call something trite when their work appeared to be mostly derivative and redundant. The individual with the decent portfolio had some great work but their front page had a sepia tone image of them with an old camera taking a picture of someone. Like I haven't seen that image 400 times. One word used three times, twice by people with hackneyed portfolios and once by an individual with the most over-used image in the history of modern photography. Trite.

The moral for me is that most things derive from an inspiration born from something else. That doesn't make it trite or less compelling if there is a vision and real work that goes into realizing that vision. I would add that one person's trite is another person's fresh. To label an entire genre as trite, right or wrong, shows ignorance of that genre. Artists that limit themselves in that way stunt themselves for art is about opening minds, not closing them.

I have a huge box full of mismatched pieces of rope that just gets bigger. In fact, I've thrown away entire garbage bags full of rope pieces on a number of occasions. I don't mean kitchen-sized but 50 gallon bags. Where do they come from? Well, shooting involves putting together a lot of rope and all rope is not all created equal. Crisp white rope gets stained, yellows over time and just plain gets all manner of gunk on it. I won't even talk about lipstick! Every time you use rope the fibers break down a little and the diameter gets just a little bit bigger. Regardless, you can put all the skeins together and they all look like they came from 100 different lots of rope.

I had another bunch of ropes ready for the garbage bin when it came time for my regular Friday shoot with Angelique. We decided on a 30s or 40s vintage wool outfit and wonderful shoes for her attire and that's when it hit me. I had seen so many images of the bondage from that time where the ropes were somewhat mismatched. I decided to go for that style but with oh so much more rope. The idea was that she is accosted and her captor just keeps using rope after rope after rope until her body is covered with it. If you asked me it worked. After long minutes Angelique is wearing several pounds of ropes over a wool outfit. She sweat, she strained and she got one hell of a workout.
